All Ireland Feile na Gael Skills

Mark Russell
Ferrybank GAA Club wishes the best of luck to Mark Russell of Kilmurray Lane, Ferrybank who will represent Waterford in next Saturday in the Feile Na Gael Skills competition in Portlaoise. Mark, son of Philip and Breda (nee Doyle), will compete for the Peader Ahearne Trophy, and it is ironic the Mark is been coached by the 1978 winner Shiner Ahearne in the lead up to the competition. Mark is also a member of the Waterford Tony Forristal squad, which is preparing for the tournament in August.

Under 12

Under 12 Hurling
Under 12 HurlingPride of place this week goes to the our under 12s who won the Bord na nOg under 12 Hurling Division 2 team in Walsh Park on Sunday last sponsored by I.T. Services. It wasn’t looking good for Ferrybank at half-time when despite the team hitting 10 wides and was still only level at half time at three points apiece. Clonea took the lead early in the second half, but with captain Shane Dineen driving the team forward we hit 5 points without reply leaving the final score 0-8 to 0-4.There was some outstanding performances throughout the field and none more so then Shane Morrissey at full back, Shane Dineen and John Ahearne in the half back line, M.J Sutton at centre field with Jeff Lawless and free scoring forward Robert Carew assisted by David Atkins and Johnno Brown. Some of the skills shown by this team were a credit to their coaches Brendan Ahern, Noel Brown and Tom “Foxy” Carew.Team: David English, Odhran MacCathmhaoil, Shane Morrissey, Shane Maher, Alex Kinsella, Shane Dineen, John Ahern, M.J Sutton, Jeff Lawless, David Atkins, Robert Carew, Jack Wicks, Isaac Fardy- Power, Johnno Brown, Daryl Griffin, Paul Carew, Andrew Whelan, Iona Heffernan, Niamh Ahearne, Liam Og Carey, Shane Ryan, John Hickey, Darragh Troy and Tiernan Morrissey,

Under 14 Hurling
Under 14 HurlingThe under 14 hurlers started the championship off with a win over Kilmacthomas in Ferrybank on Monday last with a scoreline of 5-7 to 0-3. The scoreline flatters our team and it wasn’t until the last quarter that we pulled away from the opposition. Scorers: Mark Russell 2-3, Eoin Falconer 2-1, Mark Howard 1-1, and Robert Carew 0-2 Alex Kinsella 0-1.On Monday last June 16 we travelled to Ardmore and after an indifferent performance we came through with at 0-12 to 1-7 victory but not before it took 2 brilliant saves from Keith Power in the very last minute. Robbie Carew continued his scoring form hitting over 4 points from play.Team K Power, J Lawless, S Quinn, C MacCathnaoil, D Hickey, S Morrissey, J Diggins, M Russell, J Ahern, MJ Sutton, G Kinsella, E Falconer, R Carew, M Howard, A Kinsella, O MacCathnaoil, S de la Paz.Next game against Kilrossanty on Monday June 23 in Leamybrien at 7.30

Congratulations and Commiserations !

Congratulation to Eoin O'Neill who came on as a second half substitute in Waterford's intermediates defeat by Clare in the Munster championship. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come for Eoin (playing as oppose to losing). Congratulations also to Shane Flynn on his recent marriage.

Commiserations to Shane Aherners Waterford's under 21 team which lost to Limerick in the Munster Championship. Unfortunately Shane was given only 4 weeks to work with the u 21. In comparison Limerick started training in January.

Intermediate Match Report

Our hurlers had a heavy defeat against Dunhill last Saturday. Disaster struck early on when Ferrybank had to replace 3 Key forwards and they never recovered. There are 3 more championship games to go and a big effort will have to be made to turn the season round. A team meeting is being held at 11.30 am in the club ground tomorrow. All panel members are to attend.

Intermediate Match Report

Our intermediate football team lost by 4 points this afternoon to Newtown in Walsh Park. Newtown started well but the slip lads got an early goal. Newtown continued to dominate through out the half until they had a player sent off.

After the resumption of play Newtown now playing with the wind held there own before firing over a couple of points to put pressure on Ferrybank. Ferrybank responded with a goal but shot some bad wides allowing Newtown to run out winners.

Hurling Match Blizt Report for Under 5/6/7/8 YRS

Hurling Match Blizt Report for Under 5/6/7/8 YRS
Wednesday 12th June 2008

The Ferrybank under 5/6/7/8 Panel had their fourth friendly Blitz outfield games of the season at the Sacred Heart GAA grounds, Poleberry - Monday 11th June 2008 at 7-8pm

Team: Kian Byrne, Jake Brophy, Adam O’Grady, John Collins, James O’Meara Fortune, Luke Butler, Jack Haley, Reece McDonald ,Dillion McDonald, Gavin Fox, Rachael Doyle,Theo Kavanagh, Aoife Byrne, Jack Keheo-Moran, Naoise MacCathmhaoil, Cody Griffin,Eddie Daly, Eimhin Burns, Gavin Peacock,James Tyler, Aaron Ahern.

The players split into two groups and played two games in a furious pace with good ball control and strong running all round. Every player played each game with great heart and tenacity, all the players interchanged positions in each game performing excellently with new members holding their own and showing the skills being honed in our brand new Hurling Alley.
The slight lessening of heat from the day helped the games with good running and support resulting in a flurry of scores. It was a great turn out for the Club and good to see so many new young faces proundly representing the Club for the first time with great support from their parents.
It was a beautiful evening with players no longer standing back but showing their will to win and courage from strong opposition. A few sore knuckles were noted by Ms. Doolin, Teacher senior Infants the next dat at the boys school but not complained about but displayed as a badge of pride. The good ball skills were again notable and each week sees better co-ordination from practice to games which will re-affirm the training given.

Every challenge was clean and great spirit was shown especially by our smaller Boys/Girls. Playing for the first time. It was a team effort and everyone can take a clap on the back being able to express their excitement and joy of the games and fun participating. No little skill is being shown representing the club and the discipline shown is an example to all other age groups. A special shout for the 6 trainers who had one/two totalling 7 players wearing the Ferrybank Crest on the night(J.Burns-Eimhin,F.Byrne-Aoife/Kian,J.Haley-Jack,J.Brophy-Jake,D.Butler-Luke,B.Doyle-Rachael) must be a unique record for a match with each trainer having at least one son/daughter on the team sheet.

Special thanks to Eoin Brannock for organising this event for kids which has lasted four weeks and providing drinks/snack on the last night. Big thank you to all the parents(especially the mothers and friends ) who got the kids to the venue as we could not do this without your support. A special mention for the Ferrybank Boys & Girl’s School 1st/2nd/Senior(comprising most of team) & Junior infant class (4 played on the night) e.t.c which comprises the majority of the team and the good discipline and teamwork shown is a credit to their parents and teachers Ms. Doolin and Ms. Ryan (Boys) School and the Girls School
(Ms. Egan/Ms.Quinlan/Ms. Walsh/Ms.Fogarty – mentors involved in this core group of up and coming talented players. Coaches on the sideline for the day John Haley, Fintan Byrne, Dave Butler, John Brophy, John Burns, Billy Doyle.

The Ferrybank Under 5/6/7/8 panel are put through their paces each Wednesday night 6.30-7.30 and Saturday morning10.00-11.00am in the new Hurling Alley using this new facility for Gaelic Football/Hurling for children. The approach taken uses Football and Hurling in different sessions to hone the different skill sets needed to further the long term goals of the Club and enhance these young players abilities during game time.

The coaches operate at all times in a positive environment where encouragement and the word NO or Not-able are replaced with keep going and the introduction of Hurling/Gaelic Football homework were everybody gets an A for effort. A simple method which can be used at home is to draw three blocks from 1-3 4-6 & 7-9 or A-I using chalk on a wall and let your Future star practice with a tennis ball or football hitting a square one at a time to improve hand eye co-ordination and maybe Maths or the Alphabet as well.

Each week a Player profile will be done to enlighten readers about their Senior players of the future and their concerns. Happy Birthday to Jack Haley,Kian Byrne who turned seven recently. Profile Corner as follows:
