Minor Football

Ferrybanks Minor Football team got of to a winning start yesterday in their opening game of this years championship with a thrilling 4-5 to 2-10 win over a very good St Marys team. Goals win matches, and in this case they did, as four second half goals from the Village boys sealed an exciting win. St Marys started brightly and had five points on the board early on, and at this stage things didnt look good for Ferrybank. But Darryl Griffin got Ferrybanks opening score with a point, and this gave the team some confidence, as further points from Shane Meagher and Darryl reduced the gap to two points. Ferrybank began to play some good Football, finding their men and Oran MacCathmhaoil saw his goalbound shot saved by the St Marys Goalkeeper. However, just before half time, Ferrybank switched of, and St Marys punished them, scoring 1-2 without reply to leave it 1-7 to 0-3 to the visitors at the break.
Whatever was said at the half time team talk certainly had an impact, as Ferrybank scored three goals in the opening five minutes through Oran, Darryl Griffin Penalty, and Shane Maeagher to put Ferrybank two points up. St Marys repied with a point to reduce the gap, and as the game opened up, both sides had chances, but entering the final ten minutes, St Marys were awarded a penalty, which they duely converted to put them two points up. But Ferrybank kept battling and Oran MacCathmhaoil scored his second and Ferrybanks fourth from close range to put the home side into the lead. Points were exchanged from bothe sides, and with time almost up and Ferrybank leading by a point, one last St Marys attack saw the referee award them a penalty. Robbie Carew in the goal pulled of a great save form the resulting kick to ensure the homeside ran out one point winners. This was a great win for the team, considering the fact they were missing some key players, and credit to the team for working hard in the second half to ensure the win. TEAM: Robbie Carew, Alex Kinsella, Andrew Whelan, David Atkins, Jeff Lawless, Jack Wicks, Johno Brown, Tiernan Morrissey, Shane Meagher (1-1), William Tyler, John Ahern, Oran MacCathmhaoil (2-0), Darryl Griffin (1-4),. Next up for the Minors is a trip to play Mt Sion on Saturday March 8th at 3pm.
