UNDER 21 HURLERS

Our Under 21 Hurlers had a deserved win over Clonea in the Eastern Under 21 'A' Championship in Ferrybank last Saturday afternoon on a scoreline of 0-16 to 1-10. A solid first half performace from the team which laid the foundations to this win, in which Ferrybank led from the very first minute, but had to survive a late Clonea fight back, and therefore set up a quarter final clash against De La Salle. Comac Heffernan opened the scoring in the opening minutes with a point, but Clonea quickly levelled up the game with a point. Ferrybank went on a scoring spree after that with points from Cormac Heff, Mark O' Brien (2) including one from a lovely sideline John Ahern, Sam Lawless opening up a 0-6 to 0-1 lead. Clonea had chances to reduce the gap but hit some bad wides during that period. Clonea did score the next two points, but Ferrybank made sure they always had a healthy lead with Robbie Carew, John Ahern, Cormac Heff, Mark O' Brien adding further points to ensure Ferrybank lead by 0-11 to 0-6 at the break. Mark O' Brien extended the lead early in the second half, but Clonea came more into the game and put over a couple of points to keep themselves in the hunt. Jeff Lawless was unlucky to see his goalbound shot cleared of the line by the Clonea defender, but Mark O' Brien landed three fine points to extend the lead to 7pts midway through the second half. Ferrybank's defence held firm, as Clonea looked for the goal they badly needed to stay in the game. The only goal did arrive with 7 minutes to go as a shot from the Clonea forward hit the post, came back out and it was put back into the net. Two further Clonea points reduced the gap to two points entering the closing minutes, but the lads refused to panic and Mark O' Brien put over his eighth point of the game to leave three between the sides. Clonea had one last chance to force extra time when a close range free was cleared by the defence, with the final whistle sounding after. No doubt the better team won on the day, with everyone playing their part in the win, and now Ferrybank will play De La Salle in the quarter finals with the date, time, venue to be confirmed. Thanks to all who came along and supported the team on the day.
