Our Junior Footballers qualified for the semi finals of the John J Murphy Sponsored competition with a 1-9 to 0-7 win over Ballyduff Lower in Fenor last night. This was an excellent win by the players, considering the fact their were missing a number of players. Ballyduff dominated the opening 15 minutes of the game, winning the battles all over the field, and led by 0-3 to0-0, and to be fair ought to have been futhered ahead but hit some bad wides in that opening period. However, Ferrybank weathered the storm, and began to play and got on top in the second quarter, and were rewarded with points from Greg Murphy(-3) and James Murphy who pointed from a tight angle, and at half time, Ferrybank led by 0-4 to 0-3. Cormac Heffernan extended the lead in the second half with a fine point, but Ballyduff replied almost immediately. Another point from Cormac extended the lead to two points, but Ballyduff started to get on top again, and reduced the gap to the miminum. Ballyduff missed some good chances to level the game, and even go ahead, but credit to the team, as they worked ahead, and a free from Greg Murphy dropped short in around the square and James Murphy picked up the loose ball and finished the ball to the net for a vital goal and extend the lead to four points. This goal gave Ferrybank confidence and Oisin MacCathmhaoil saw his close range shot for goal saved by the Ballyduff Lower Goalie, which went out for a '45. Greg Murphy converted to extend the lead. Ferrybank had a great chance to finish the game when Martin Freeman picked up a pass from Cormac Heff, only to see his goalbound shot hit the underside of the crossbar, and the ball was cleared. Oisin MacCathmhaoil scored a good point to extend the lead, and in the final minutes of the game, Luke Flynn pointed from close range to ensure a good win on the night. A good win for the team on the night, with everyone playing their part, and despite a shaky start to the game, the lads grew in confidence as the game went on, and now move into the semi finals, with their opponents yet to be confirmed.
