INERMEDIATE HURLING:

Ferrybank Intermediate Hurlers bowed out of this years competition where they were defeated by Portlaw on a scoreline of 1-15 to 1-14 in Walsh Park this afternoon. Ferrybank fought hard in the closing 10 minutes but time went against them, when looking for that all important point that woul have levelled the game up. Ferrybank made a good start to the game with Cormac Heffernan, Mark O' Brien, Sam Lawless scoring good points, but allowed Portlaw back into the game conceeding some soft scores. Further scores from Eoin O' Neill, Mark O' Brien extended the lead to five points to three at the midway stage of the first half. Ferrybank contuined to produce some good hurling, moving the ball well and that was shown on the board with excellent points from Sam Lawless & Cormac Heffernan putting Ferrybank 0-8 to 0-5 ahead. However coming up to half time, Portlaw hit 1-3, scoring a crucial goal, and despite Mark O' Brien pointing, Portlaw led 1-8 to 0-9 at the break. Portlaw opened the second half stronger scoring four unanswered points, opening up a 6pt lead, before Mark O' Brien replied with a point. Another two points from Portlaw saw them extend the lead to seven points, as they began to take a grip on the game. Mark O' Brien replied with two 65'. Eoin O' Neill & MJ Sutton saw their goalbound shots saved as Ferrybank searched for the goal. Luke Flynn scored a point to close the gap, and in the final minutes of the game, Tommy Carew scored a goal from close range to reduce it to one point. But from the puckout, the final whistle went, and Portlaw advanced to the semi final.
