ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

UNDER 20 HURLING:

Ferrybank's U20 hurlers qualified for the Eastern Final with a dramatic late late show victory over a gallant St. Mary's side last Saturday afternoon on a scoreline of 3-15 to 4-10. With time virtually up, a low shot from Caolan MacCathmhaoil squeezed its way to the net to ensure victory for the team, following a strange second half of hurling.

With the game going ahead following a pitch inspection, Ferrybank got off to a flying start, starting off with a goal in the opening minute from Paddy Mackey, who batted the ball home from close range. Further points from Jay Bagge, Jacob Richards, and Conor Haley extended out the lead, before St Mary's replied with two points to open their account. Ferrybank kept the scoreboard ticking over with further scores from Conor (2) and Jay. However, St. Mary's were gradually finding their feet, and began to look dangerous up front, and Ferrybank's six-point lead was quickly wiped out with two goals from St Mary's in as many minutes to level it up.

Despite this setback, the lads quickly responded coming towards the half time break with a burst of 1-02, thanks to a second goal from Paddy Mackey, followed by points from Caolan and Jay to ensure a 2-08 to 2-04 lead.

An early score from Caolan MacCathmhaoil pushed the lead out to five, but similar to the opening half, St. Mary's replied with two quick goals. A long range free from the halfway line dropped into the Ferrybank square, and the ball was deemed to have crossed the line, much to the surprise of both teams. Suddenly, St. Mary’s sensed victory, and a fourth goal quickly arrived when a long ball into the Ferrybank defence wasn't cleared and the ball ended up in the net. Despite a badly needed score from Conor Haley, St. Mary’s hit four of the next five points to open up a three-point lead.

With the game now in the balance, crucial scores from Harry Flanagan and Conor Haley closed the gap back to a point. As the game entered its closing stages, St. Mary’s won a crucial puckout and worked the ball up the field to score a point to push them two ahead. Needing to win the game, Ferrybank got a free which Conor Haley duly converted, to again close the gap. From the resulting puckout, which Ferrybank won, a pass from Sean Adeyemi, found Caolan MacCathmhaoil in a bit of space, and his shot evaded a couple of St. Mary's defenders and into the net for the winning score.

From the puckout, the whistle blew, and the lads have now qualified for the Eastern final against Erin’s Own. No doubt, plenty of talking points throughout the game, but the team dug deep when it needed against a gallant St. Mary's side that were just a couple of seconds away from being in the final.

Thanks to all who came along and supported the team on the day.

TEAM: Kyle, Sean B, Harry (0-01), Jacob (0-01), Izaak, Jay (0-03), Evan, Sean A,  Jack, Finn, Caolan (1-02), Conor (0-08), Paddy (2-0).
