JUNIOR HURLING:
Pride of place this week goes to the Ferrybank Junior Hurlers who were crowned Eastern champions last Monday at a wet and windy St. Saviours GAA grounds, defeating Butlerstown on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-6. Conditions were difficult for both sides throughout the game, but the lads got the key scores when it mattered.
Butlerstown got the opening two scores of the game, as they were aided by the breeze. However, a score from a placed ball from Sparky settled the side down. Both sides then traded points, with Shane O’Sullivan getting the second point, working hard to evade a couple of Butlerstown defenders to put the ball over. Despite losing Alex Kinsella with a finger injury, Ferrybank got more into it, and a fine move involving Fionn McGarrity and Sparky saw the ball passed to Paddy Mackey who planted the ball into the corner of the net. The lads had a couple of chances to extend their lead, but the wind wasn't helping their cause. The Ferrybank defence was solid, giving little or no chances, and towards the end of the opening half, placed balls points from Sparky ensured the team lead 1-04 to 0-6 at the break.
Ferrybank slowly began to get on top, and crucial points followed through Fionn McGarrity (2) and Sparky (2) to extend the advantage. The game was sealed when a long ball from Cody into the forward line was caught by Greg Murphy who turned his man, and placed the ball into the net for the second goal. Butlerstown rallied towards the end looking for a goal to get them back into it and a smart save from Kyle Daly prevented his goal from being breached. A third point from Fionn increased the lead. In the dying moments, Butlerstown finally unlocked the Ferrybank defence to get a consolation goal. Sparky finished out the scoring with a point.
A great win for the team, a special praise to Cian Martin and Seamie McGavock who kept all the players going throughout the competition, and despite losing a few players along the way, they kept going, week in, week out. Captain Alex Kinsella accepted the trophy on behalf of the team, and the lads now go onto the County final this coming Saturday, September 7th to play Dungarvan in Dunhill at 3pm where once again, all support will be appreciated.
Thanks to all who came along and supported the team on the night.

SENIOR HURLING:
Ferrybank Senior hurlers retained their Senior status for 2026 season with a hard-fought win over a gallant Brickey Rangers side at Lemybrien last Sunday. Two crucial goals in as many minutes swung the game in Ferrybank’s favour in the second-half that put daylight between two evenly matched teams.
There was very little to separate the teams in the opening half, with the sides level on six occasions, with Brickey Rangers holding a slight 0-5 to 0-3 lead after 11 minutes, with points from Mark O’Brien, Shane Oates, and Ruaidhri McGarrity. Ferrybank levelled it up with a fine score from Shane Oates, and a placed ball from Mark O’ Brien. However, almost immediately, Brickeys edged back in front with a score from a free. Ferrybank enjoyed a slight purple patch by hitting three of the next four points, with Robbie Carew and Neil O’Sullivan contributing to the scoreboard. Approaching half-time, Brickey's got in for a goal which edged them two points up. Both sides traded points and Brickey Rangers held a three-point lead.
Ferrybank got off to a dream start in the second-half, when straight from the throw-in, the ball fell kindly to Neil O’Sullivan, who drove at the Brickey's defence and hit a low hard shot to the corner of the net for a super goal, and draw the sides level.
Brickey's response was swift with two points, but Ferrybank kept coming back with scores from Conor Haley and Mark O’Brien to level it up. With Brickey's down a man, the scoring dried up for several minutes, as both sides didn't want to make mistakes at such a vital period of the game. When finally, a point was scored by Mark O’Brien, it was quickly wiped out by Brickey's to level it up.
However, a big two minutes of the game, saw Ferrybank hit 2-01 without reply to take control, a point from Robbie Carew edged the lads back in front, and again, from another Ferrybank attack, saw the ball going to Ruaidhri McGarrity, and he made no mistake from close range, which gave the team and the supporters a huge lift.
Moments later, a third goal arrived through Robbie Carew who planted the sliothar to the net, which put seven between the sides. This put huge confidence into the players, and they began to manage out the game, giving little away in defence, while Bricky's looked for a goal to get them back into it. A final score from Robbie Carew sealed the win on the day.
No doubt, a good performance from the team, who had put in an encouraging performance last week, and it helped them going into the game. Well done to the players, on what has been a tough campaign, especially missing a couple of key players through injuries for matches, given the condensed formula of the championship. Special words of thanks to Paddy, Stan, Fintan, Doxer, Millie, and Tom who kept going week in, week out, preparing the team as best as they could, and blooding young players, giving them the confidence in playing at senior level, and no doubt they will have enjoyed the experience, and will improve from it.
To all the supporters, who came along week in, week out, and supported the team, it was very much appreciated.
