ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

MINOR HURLING:

It has been a wonderful week for Ferrybank GAA club, starting with the Minor Hurlers capturing the Division Two County Final title in brilliant fashion with a 3-20 to 1-13 win over a spirited Clonea side last Thursday in Carriganore.

From the start of the Championship, week-in, week-out, the team have been consistent with their displays, starting in Tallow all the way to the final, and have run out deserving winners of this year’s championship. On the night itself, the team showed a great attitude, led from start to finish, and were very strong towards the end of the game when it mattered most.

Early scores from Conor Haley and Jay Bagge got the team off to a good start. Things got even better when Jay Bagge, through sheer perseverance, kept battling for the ball before his low shot went into the net. Further scores from Conor Haley kept Ferrybank ahead, which was followed by two superb points from Jay Bagge from awkward angles, who was certainly causing the Clonea defence plenty of problems with his pace and shooting accuracy.

Clonea got level with a goal of their own, when a quick free wasn’t dealt with by the defence, and this resulted in the Clonea forward’s low shot going into the corner of the net, giving Kyle Daly no chance. Despite having to make a few changes on the field, this didn’t disrupt the Ferrybank effort, and fine scores from Jacob Richards (2), Jay Bagge and Conor Haley ensured a 1-10 to 1-08 lead at the break.

Both sides exchanged scores after the break with Conor Haley (2) supplying the scores for Ferrybank. With the game still there for the taking, the Ferrybank defence led by Conor Daly, Lochlann Flanagan and Sean Byrne, gave very little away, and this began to frustrate their opponents, who couldn’t carve open the defence for a goal they were badly seeking. The lads kept their heads, with the hard working Caolan MacCathmhaoil, Adam Aspel and Evan Mullally winning a lot of ball, giving the right pass, which set up scores for Jay Bagge and Conor Haley, who dully obliged with points. Entering the final ten minutes, this is where the lads finished strong, when Sean Adeyemi picked up the ball, cut in from the sideline, looked up, passed to Conor Haley, whose shot flew into the corner of the net. That gave huge energy into the team, and from there on, there was only going to be one winner, with Sean Adeyemi taking over the scoring with two quick points, followed by a fine goal from close range to seal the win. Conor Haley closed out the scoring on the night with a point.

The full time whistle sounded where jubilant scenes followed on the pitch, and when things settled down, a proud Lochlann Flanagan accepted the cup on behalf of the team, who no doubt enjoyed every moment out there. A special night for the players and the club, and no doubt this talented team can certainly go on, and win more trophies in the years ahead.

As stated earlier, they have won a very competitive division, finished top of the group, and when it came to the semi-final and final were deserving winners on the night. On the night itself, the defence stood up anything Clonea threw at them, with Kyle Daly in goal keeping everything organised, the defence of Sean Byrne, Paddy Mackey and Mark Flanagan solid. Conor Daly, Harry Flanagan and Lochlann Flanagan on top of a dangerous half-forward line. Fionn MCGarrity and Jacob Richards in midfield working hard. Conor Haley, Adam Aspel and Evan Mullally always chasing the ball, and never giving up on lost causes, with Sean Adeyemi, Jay Bagge and Caolan MacCathmhaoil outstanding throughout.

To the management team of Robbie Carew, Davy Atkins and Ryan Tierney, along with Sam Lawless, Izaak Richards, Cormac Heffernan and Naoise MacCathmhaoil, and Luke the mascot, fantastic achievement throughout the season, believing in the players, and the hard work has paid off, thank you to all. To all the supporters who came along every week out to support the team from Tallow, to Dungarvan, to Carriganore, thanks to all. It was great to see the cup paying a visit to the boys and girls national schools the following day, and also the club’s grounds on Saturday morning for all the young superstars of the future to sample the winning feeling.

TEAM: Kyle Daly, Sean Byrne, Paddy Mackey, Sean Adeyemi (1-2), Conor Daly, Harry Flanagan, Lochlann Flanagan, Mark Flanagan, Fionn McGarrity, Adam Aspel, Conor Haley (1-10), Evan Mullally, Jay Bagge (1-06), Jacob Richards (0-02), Caolan MacCathmhaoil, Dean Clarke, Max O’ Sullivan, Conor Morrissey, Jack Hobab, Tommy Lea.

PREMIER INTERMEDIATE HURLING:

Our Intermediate hurlers qualified for the Premier Intermediate Hurling County Final with a hard fought win over Knockanore Shamrocks last Saturday afternoon on a scoreline of 1-23 to 1-20 after extra time, with the sides level at 1-17 each at normal time.

A tough, tense game throughout, Ferrybank made hard work of the win, especially with the amount of possession they had, but at times the final pass left them down. With Shamrocks getting the opening two scores, Ryan Tierney replied to get the lads off the mark with a fine point. Then both sides began to exchange points with Mark O’ Brien (2), Darryl Griffin and Neil O’ Sullivan adding to the scoreboard, which put us into a one-point lead. Ferrybank were almost in for a goal, when Robbie Carew’s low shot was cleared off the line by the Shamrocks defender. On the lead up to half-time, Shamrocks got a goal which was gifted by the Ferrybank defence, when an over-played free went astray, Shamrocks gathered the ball and put it into the Ferrybank area, which wasn’t dealt with and ended up in the net for a goal. Points from Ryan Tierney and Mark O’ Brien got the sides level again, but in injury time in the opening half, two points from placed balls ensured Shamrocks lead 1-09 to 0-08 at the break.

Shamrocks got the opening score of the second-half from another free, but three quick points from Sam Lawless, Damien Ahern and Seamus Burtchaell got it back to two. However, some needless frees were being punished by Shamrocks. Two quick points from Neil O’ Sullivan again reduced the gap. With many stoppages in the second-half, the flow of the game was being interrupted at times, and this didn’t suit Ferrybank. A point from Robbie Carew got Ferrybank back to one, but they couldn’t get the levelling score, as two more pointed frees from Shamrocks opened a three point lead. With the game entering its closing moments, a long ball into the Shamrocks area was fielded by Ruadhri McGarrity, as he evaded a few Shamrocks defenders, his low shot passed the advancing goalie and ended up in the net to draw the sides level. With a lot of stoppage time to be played a '65 put the Shamrocks ahead, but Mark O’ Brien levelled it quickly back up, only for Shamrocks to regain the lead with another point. With time ticking down, one last chance saw the lads win a free, and Mark O’ Brien put it over to level it up and force extra-time.

Shamrocks quickly got going with two points. With tired legs out there, two placed points from Mark  O’ Brien levelled it up for the umpteenth time. Into the second period of extra-time, Shane Oates was very unlucky to see his low shot flash narrowly wide from a tight angle. Shamrocks edged ahead with a score, but credit to the lads, as they kept battling away, and a point from Mark O’ Brien brought them level, and Mark  finally put Ferrybank ahead in the game with a fine score, that gave momentum to the team. Two more scores from Mark O’ Brien saw Ferrybank close out the game, and qualify for the final.

A hard fought success in the end, despite conceding too many frees in normal time, the lads finally got over the line in extra-time . Well done to Paddy, Stan and Fintan for guiding the team to the final.

Cappoquin now stand in the way, and a big test awaits next Saturday in Walsh Park at 4pm. It will be another big day out for the club, and we would ask everyone to come out and show your support for the team.

A limited number of flags will be available for purchase during the week, please keep an eye on our social media platforms for more information.

TEAM: Cormac O’ Driscoll, John Ahern, Naoise MacCathmhaoil, Damien Ahern (0-01), Stephen O’ Kane, Cormac Heffernan, Sam Lawless (0-01), Ryan Tierney (0-02), Seamus Burtchaell (0-01), Daryl Griffin (0-01), Luke Flynn, Neil O’ Sullivan (0-03), Robbie Carew (0-01), Mark O’ Brien (0-13), Riadhri McGarrity (1-00), Izaak Richards, Shane Oates, Davy Atkins, Eimhim Burns, Kevin Hurley, Maciek Tomczuk, Eoin O’ Neill, Lee Clarke, John Collins, Tommy Burtchaell.

INTERMEDIATE CAMOGIE:

Our Intermediate Camogie side were narrowly edged out in their latest league game against Lismore last Tuesday on a scoreline of 3-08 to 1-11. Two second-half goals in as many minutes swung the game in Lismore’s favour, but credit to the team, as they finished strongly in the game. The girls got off to a good start with a goal from Valerie O’ Brien, with points following through Niamh Ahearne and Roisín Oates. Lismore were testing the Ferrybank defence, and replied with 1-04 without reply to leave them 1-05 to 1-03 ahead at the break.

Points were exchanged between the sides at the restart with Niamh Ahearne getting her third of the game. However, the game quickly turned as Lismore scored two goals in as many minutes to put them further ahead. With a couple of switches made, Ferrybank came more into the game with points from Valerie O’ Brien, Chloe and Niamh (2) reduced the gap. The girls were unlucky when a couple of goal chances went a begging, but they battled away with scores from Orla, and Niamh got them back to a goal. However, time caught up with them, and Lismore held on for the win. A much-improved display from the team, despite missing a couple of key players, they can take a lot of positives from the match.

UNDER 13 HURLING:

The combined Ferrybank / St. Saviours side are in semi-final action this coming Tuesday, September 5th against St Patricks in Carriganore with a 6:45pm thrown in time. UNDER 10 / 15 CAMOGIE TOURNAMENT:

It was another super Saturday for the Under 10 Camogie team as they took part in the Danny Bowe memorial tournament held in the Mount Sion GAA grounds. On a great morning for the games, Ferrybank girls pitted their wits against Mount Sion A and B team, and Tramore. The girls won their three games, went into the final against Mount Sion A, and defeated them by two goals to nil. It was great to see all matches being fiercely competitive, and the team showed great energy, and determination throughout, and including the final. Well done to all the coaches and trainers, and to the players for the hard work they put in. In the Under 15 section, the Camogie team were up against St. Molleran’s and Mount Sion, and put in another huge effort throughout the matches, with great work rate being shown by all. No doubt, a bright future awaits for many of these players, and thanks to all the parents for coming along and supporting the teams. Thank you also to Mount Sion for being excellent hosts of a well-run competition.
