Ferrybank GAA - Weekly Notes

JUNIOR CAMOGIE – COUNTY CHAMPIONS:
Pride of place this week goes to our Junior Camogie team who were crowned County Champions in Carriganore last Saturday afternoon on a score-line of 3-05 to 1-07 over a gallant Tramore team in the D.I.D. sponsored competition.
Playing against the breeze in the opening half, Ferrybank made a great start when Helen McEvoy scoring a fine goal following a well worked move. Tramore came fighting back replying with some good points and a goal before half-time extended the seasiders lead to 1-05 to 1-02 at the break.
With the breeze at their backs, Ferrybank got a second goal, following a foul on Clodagh Whelan and Niamh Ahearne’s long range free went all the way to the net to draw the two teams level. With the game up for grabs, points from Claire Smith-Baldwin and Iona Heffernan kept Ferrybank in front, and entering the closing moments, Debbie Boden sealed the win for Ferrybank.
Captain Helen McEvoy collected the cup amid joyous scenes and Iona Heffernan picked up the D.I.D. sponsored Player of the Match award for her outstanding performance.
A great win for the girls, who now step up to the Intermediate ranks next year. Special word of thanks to Paul Martin, Shiner Ahearne and Zoe Delahunty for looking after the team throughout the year, and to the large number of supporters who came out and cheered on the team.
Also, it was great to see the Juvenile Camogie team playing during the half-time interval in the Go Games, which they enjoyed.

INTERMEDIATE HURLING:
Our Intermediate hurlers qualified for the Gerry Kennedy Crash Repairs Eastern Final with a comprehensive win over Clonea in Kill last Saturday afternoon, winning on a score line of 0-13 to 0-03.
Aided with the breeze in the opening half, Ferrybank started well and John Ahern opening our account with two fine scores, before Clonea replied with two points.
From the 15th minute onwards, Ferrybank took the lead and never looked back with Mark O' Brien scoring two points. While the lads kept the scoreboard ticking over, the team hit some bad wides. However, further points from the impressive John Ahern, Cormac O' Driscoll, and Sam Lawless, saw the village side go in with a 0-09 to 0-03 lead at the break.
Facing the wind in the second-half, Ferrybank kept up their good work rate and Mark O' Brien and Cormac O' Driscoll popped over points at vital stages to extend the lead. Tried as they did, Clonea found the Ferrybank defence hard to break down, and this was emphasised by not allowing Clonea to score in the second-half.
Mark finished of the scoring with another brace of points. Overall a fully deserved win for the side, with everyone playing their part in this great win, and the team can now look forward with confidence where they will play Dunhill in the Eastern Final on Saturday October 15th at 3:45pm in Walsh Park.

JUNIOR HURLING:
The Junior hurlers capped off a fine weekend for the club with an emphatic victory over Butlerstown in the John J Murphy Eastern Junior B Shield semi-final on a scoreline of 3-14 to 0-06.
Ferrybank started well, and were rewarded for their scoring chances, when midway through the opening half, Marty Freeman scored from close range, before going off injured. Points from Jeff Lawless had Ferrybank leading 1-04 to 0-03 at the break.
With the half back line dominating, and setting up chances, Ferrybank got their second goal through Odhran MacCathmhaoil, receiving a pass from James Murphy and planting the sliothar to the net. Ferrybank were in control at this stage and Alex Power scored a fine third goal, rounding his marker, and placing it low into the corner.

NURSERY:
The Club Nursery takes place every Saturday morning in the GAA field from 10am-11am, and it is aimed for boys and girls aged between 5 and 6 years of aged.
We would encourage all parents/guardians to bring their children along and learn the skills of our national game. It is also a great way for kids to meet new friends. All equipment, hurleys and helmets are supplied on the day.

CLOTHING COLLECTION:
The clothing collection continues, and if you have any unwanted clothes, curtains, towels, paired shoes and belts, you can drop them down to the GAA field on a week night or on a Saturday morning from 10am -12pm.

GREYHOUND NIGHT:
The club's annual night at the dogs will take place on Saturday November 19th at Kilcohan Greyhound stadium. This is the club's main fundraiser of the year, and we would encourage all players, supporters, and members to support this great night out. So keep this night free, and make a note of the date in your diary.

UNDER 12 HURLING & FOOTBALL:
It’s been a busy period for the U12s in both codes. The hurlers have played three games in the Autumn League; defeating Butlerstown, Ballyduff Lower, while going down to Mount Sion.
The footballers played out a draw against St. Saviours, but were defeated by St. Marys and John Mitchells. The footballers are back out this coming Friday night October 7th with a trip to play Ballyduff Lower at 6pm.
