UNDER 12 HURLING:
The Under 12 Hurlers travelled away to Butlerstown last Wednesday night in Round 1 of the hurling league. The hosts started the stronger, with some well taken scores to move three points clear, before Ferrybank got on the scoreboard with a '65. Butlerstown replied with a point, and just on the stroke of half-time, Ferrybank hit the net to level the game up. Ferrybank started the second-half with the upper hand, and took the lead with some well taken goals, and with some excellent defending by the defence, they held on for the win.
UNDER 12 FOOTBALL:
The Under 12 Footballers made the trip to Carrickbeg to take on the Mollerans in the City League. The game started slowly, with scores hard to come by. Ferrybank made the break through, with a burst of scoring midway through the opening half with 1-3 in a six minute spell, after some fine teamwork. St. Mollerans hit back with two unanswered points, to leave the game in the balance at half-time. St. Mollerans piled on the pressure in the second-half, and the lads were under the cosh for long periods, but the lads kept their nerve, and hit St. Mollerans with some well taken scores to relieve the pressure on the defence who were outstanding on the night. A couple of late points ensured the win for the lads. Thanks to all the parents who came to support the lads on the night.
UNDER 8 HURLING:
The Under 8 hurlers travelled to compete in the Roanmore Blitz last Saturday morning and played three games against Rower Inistioge, De La Salle & Carrick Swans. On what was a lovely day for hurling, the lads played some lovely hurling, and scored at will in devastating fashion. Well done to all the squad on a great exhibition of hurling that was a joy to watch. TEAM: Conor, Aaron, Ryan, Caolain, Conor, Jack, Jacob, Ider, Evan, Kyle, Luke. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances on the day our second team didn’t get to play.
INTERMEDIATE HURLING:
Our Intermediate hurlers exited the Gerry Kennedy Crash Repairs sponsored competition last Saturday afternoon at the semi-final stage, where they were defeated by Ballygunner on a scoreline of 2-14 to 0-14. No complaints on the day, as the lads failed to find their rythm during the game. Following an even opening ten minutes, Ballygunner hit 1-03 without reply, and from there on always held the upper hand. Despite good points from Sam Lawless, Mark O' Brien, Phil Blake, MJ Sutton and Eoin O' Neill, Ferrybank hit a number of bad wides, and Ballygunner held a four point lead at the break.
A soft second goal conceded early in the second-half, left Ferrybank with an uphill task. Ferrybank kept battling away and got back to four points, but the goal they badly needed never came as the Ballygunner defence kept us at bay, and in the end ran out worthy winners.
No doubt this was a tough defeat, but the lads gave it their all, and this is a young team who will bounce back even stronger next year, and hopefully the injuries to some key players will have heeled up. Thanks to Mick, Padraig and Doxer for all their help in preparing the team during the season.
TEAM: Cormac O' Driscoll, David Atkins, Gary Coady, Seamus Burtchaell, Andrew Heffernan, Damien Ahern, Graham Coady, Mark O' Brien(0-06), Luke Flynn, MJ Sutton(0-02), Sam Lawless(0-02), Phil Blake(0-01), John Ahern, Tommy Carew(0-01), Eoin O' Neill(0-02), Eric Corcoran, Oisin MacCathmhaoil, Pat O' Neill, Paul Martin, Alex Kinsella, William Tyler, Paul Carew, Conor Hogan, Martin Freeman.
SYMPATHY:
We would like to express our condolences to the O' Brien family, whose mother Elizabeth (Betty) O' Brien passed away last Friday week. To her son Kilian and daughters, Aisling, Alison and Anita; and also to her extended family. Ar Dheis de go raibh a hanam.
JUNIOR FOOTBALL:
The Junior Footballers will play Roanmore in the semi-finals of the John J Murphy sponsored competition this coming Saturday September 20th. No time/venue has been confirmed for this game.
UNDER 16 CAMOGIE: The Under 16 Camogie side bowed out of the competition with a defeat to Clonea last Tuesday night. The girls gave it their all on the night, but Clonea were the better team. Despite this defeat to a strong team, the girls can take heart over the course of the year, and we wish Clonea well for the final.
MINOR CAMOGIE: The Minor Camogie side have now qualified for the Minor County final, as their opponents Tramore gave us a walkover last Saturday evening. They will now play Lismore in the final, with the date, venue and time yet to be confirmed.
UNDER 10 HURLING:
Another superb performance from the Under 10 hurlers who captured the Tommy Burtchaell Shield in Na Piarsaigh GAA grounds in Limerick on Sunday. The team played five games defeating Kilcornige, Bruff, Meelick, Na Piarsaigh and then the final against Cappamore winning by a point in the end, with the final being a titanic battle. The final was a heroic affair, and inspiring by the physically small Ferrybank side, and in a David and Goliath finish, Ferrybank emerged victorious.
TEAM: Kevin, Shane Egan, Caolan, Alex, Ola, Pabil, Jake, Ruaidhri, Jamie, Daniel, Sean Heffernan, Sean Fagan, Shane Purcell, Izaak, Joe.
This is the first time in seven years that the trophy has come to Ferrybank. Well done lads, another proud day for the Parish and Club. See photo attached of the lads.
