UNDER 16 CAMOIGE: Pride of place this week goes to the Ferybank Under 16 Camoige team who captured the county title yesterday afternoon in St Mollerans Gaa grounds Carrickbeg. Dungarvan provided the opposition, with little between the teams in the league section, this was aways going to be a close affair. The Village girls got of to a perfect start when Aislinn O' Keeffe raised the green flag, and moments later, Aislinn got goal number two with a fine strike. At this stage things were looking good, ging into half time, with Ferrybank leading 2-0 to 0-0.
Dungarvan were first out of the blocks with a point to open their accout, but Ferrybanks reponse was swift with Niamh Ahearne slotting over two fine points, and Aislin O' Keffee scoring her third goal and a point to extend Ferrybanks lead to 3-3 to 0-1. It was now the turn of the defence to perform, as Dungarvan came back into the game with a goal with 10 minutes to go, but Iona Heffernan, Aoife Byrne, Aisling Heffernan held firm and midfielder Zoe Power excelling. Another Dungarvan goal with two miutes to go reduced the gap to six points, and with the last puck of the game, Dungarvan got their third goal. The final whistle sounded with Ferrybank winners on a scoreline of 3-3 to 3-1. Sean Fleming of the Waterford County Camoige board presented the trophy to captain Aisling Heffernan amid joyous scenes. JUNIOR FOOTBALL: Our Junior Footballers couldnt make it a double on the day as they were defeated by Kilmacthomas in the final of the Eastern Football championship in Walsh Park on a scoreline of 3-5 to 0-11. Goals win matches and thats the case in the game, as Klmacthomas got crucial goals, just when it looked Ferrybank would win this game. Ferrybank made an excellent start to the game with points from Sam Lawless, John Byrne, Eoin O' Neill put Ferrybank three points up. Kilmac got their first score from a pointed free, and moments later Ferrybank lost possesssion in midfield saw a swift Kilmac counter attack and the ball ended up in the net to give Kilmac the lead. Ferrybank replied quickly and almost scored a goal when a high ball into the Kilmac box and John Treacy palmed the ball towards the corner of the net, but the Kilmac goalie pulled of a excellent save. Kevin Hurley pointed the'45' to level it up, and Kevin pointed again to put Ferrybank into the lead. Another good Ferrybank move saw the ball to Greg Murphy and his goalbound shot blocked at the expense of a '45' which Kevin Hurley converted to give Ferrybank a two point lead. Just before half time Kilmac scored a crucial goal when Ferrybank lost possession in midfield at Kilmac moved the ball quickly and the ball ended up in the net to give them a 2-2 to 0-6 lead. Kilmac had the better of the early exchanges in the second half, as Ferrybank found it difficult with the slippery conditions, and Kilmac put over two points to open up a four point lead, Kevin Hurley reduced the gap to three points, but crucially for Ferrybank they gave away a soft third goal which proved the difference as the defence failed to clear the ball and Kilmac capitalise on the mistake and the ball ended up in the net giving James Troy no chance. Ferrybank tried hard and points from Luke Flynn, Sam Lawless, Kevin Hurley reduced the gap to four points and in the closing minutes Ferrybank worked the ball up the field where Greg Murphy goalbound shot just went over the bar to reduce the gap to three. Ferrybank had one final chance but Kilmac cleared the ball and the final whistle went. Obviously the goals were a killer for the team, and who knows what the result would have been if Ferrybank had taken their's but thats the way it goes, and we wish Kilmac well for the County final. The lads gave it their all on the day and no one could be faulted for their effort. Thanks to all who came along and supported the team on the day. UNDER 5,6,7,8, HURLING: The Ferrybank main pitch was full yesterday when Roanmore came over and our matches were played. The sun was shining, and the crowd were cheering, and the atmosphere was electric. The Under 5 & 6 hurlers controlled their games, and provided the fans with a very enteraining Saturday morning. The hurling was excellent and it was obvious that these young players are relishing the game. Thanks to the parent for their support, as this undoubtably boots the teams performance. The Under 7 team battled it out, and enjoyed early leads, but Roanmore came storming back in the second ahead, and the game ended in a draw. The Under 8 Hurlers suffered a defeat, but the silver lining was that the lads dominated the secod half. Well done to all the Ferrybank teams against formidable opponents.
