GAA NOTES
UNDER 21 FOOTBALL: Our under 21 Footballers were defeated by Kilmacthomas in the under 21 football Eastern semi final on a scoreline of 3-12 to 2-11 after extra time in Carrickbeg. The team gave it their all on the night, but the second period of extra time proved crucial as Kilmac scored 2-3 to -1, and booked their place in the final. Despite missing a few players for the game, Ferrybank fought to the end, and can count themselves very unlucky not to have got a replay.Luke Flynn opened the scoring on the night after five minutes, but Kilmacthomas came right back into the game scoring five points without reply. Things didnt look good for Ferrybank at this stage, but in the final 10 minutes of the first half, Ferrybank came right back into it with a goal from Mark O' Brien. This spured the team on and Kevin Hurley put over 2 good points from play, and a second Luke Flynn point put Ferrybank two points clear with half time approaching, DJ Magee saw his goalbound shot saved which could have increased the lead. With the last kick of the half, Kilmac reduced the gap to a point, to leave the half time score 1-4 to -6pts. Four minutes into the second half, Kilmac were awarded a penelty, which they duely converted to open a two point lead. But Ferrybank quickly levelled with points from Mark Russell and Kevin Hurley. Mark was unlucky as he could easily have got a goal. Three quick points from Kilmac inside 4 minutes stretched the lead to three points with 10 minutes to go, but credit to Ferrybank as they refused to throw in the towel, and led superbly by Kevin Hurley who slotted over three points to level up the game at 1-9 each. The whistle blew for full time, and extra time was played. In that first period, Kilmac shot a few wides in the first five minutes, but Ferrybank went into the lead when Kevin Hurley converted a penelty to the net, and another point from Kevin put Ferrybank 2-10 to 1-9 at the end of the first period of extra time. Sadly the second period is where Kilmac got the vital scores, with a goal in the first minute, and a point straight after. The momentum was now with Kilmac as the lads began to tire and a third goal for them left them a goal clear. Another great score from Kevin reduced the gap to two points, with time running out Kilmac got a further two further points to run out four point winners. Ferrybank can count themselves very unlucky not to have got a replay out of this game, as they gave it their all night, with Kevin Hurley outstanding in contributing 1-8 to the team on the night. Thanks to all who came along and supported the team on the night. We wish Kilmac well for the final.
