Roanmore Tournament Report U-9 Saturday 13th September 2008

Hurling Matches Report for Under - 9 YRS
Saturday 13th September 2008

The Ferrybank under 9 Panel had their yearly outing to the Roanmore Tournament outfield games at the Roanmore Pitch at the Cleaboy GAA grounds 10-11.30am

Team: Team Captain Sean Cullen, Naoise Mccathmhaoil, Neill O’Sullivan, Aaron Smith, Hussian Smith, Rachael Doyle, Liam Doyle, Aaron Rafter,Cameron Wells, Seam Martin,Graine Heffernan, Steven Walsh,Adam Carroll, Jack Dowling

The players played in a three game format with 10 minutes a side and 5 minute breaks at the end of each game. The first game against Ballyduff Lower was played at a furious pace with good ball control and strong running all round. The goals when they came were built from the effort of the whole team from our defence to the forwards. The next game was against a strong Portlaw side which was skilful and importantly playing their first game. Even with rotation of players fatigue on young legs was a factor with the strong September sun feeling more like Paris or Malaga than at the Roanmore Grounds. Strong resistance
gave way to a win by Portlaw which was evenly balanced to the end. The last game was was against Kilrossity which was the best display even do on losing side for Ferrybank. Some players could be mentioned as being more prominent but the overall effort and skill shown was an example to all.

Every player played each game with great heart and tenacity, all the players interchanged positions in each game performing excellently with new members holding their own and showing the skills being honed in our brand new Hurling Alley.
It was a great turn out for the Club and good to see so many new young faces proundly representing the Club for the first time with great support from their parents.
It was a beautiful day with players no longer standing back but showing their will to win and courage from strong opposition. A few sore knuckles were noted by Mr. Duggan, Principal Ferrybank Boys School but not complained about but displayed as a badge of pride. The good ball skills were notable and each week sees better co-ordination from practice to games which will re-affirm the training given.

Every challenge was clean and great spirit was shown especially by our smaller Boys/Girls. Playing for the first time. It was a team effort and everyone can take a clap on the back being able to express their excitement and joy of the games and fun participating. No little skill is being shown representing the club and the discipline shown is an example to all other age groups. A special mention for the trainers who had the job of transport and running the line Billy Doyle, John Heffernan each trainer having at least one son/daughter on the team sheet. Great commitment shown by Graine Hefferanan playing the same day as her Birthday and her dad John who looks after the team.

Big thank you to all the parents(especially the mothers and friends ) who got the kids to the venue as we could not do this without your support. A special mention for the Ferrybank Boys & Girl’s School 1st/2nd/Senior(comprising most of team) e.t.c which comprises the majority of the team and the good discipline and teamwork shown is a credit to their parents and teachers in the (Boys) School and the Girls School involved in this core group of up and coming talented players. Coaches on the sideline for the day Billy Doyle, John Hefferan.

The Ferrybank Under 8/9/10 panel are put through their paces each Monday night 6.30-7.30 and Friday night 6.30-7.30pm in the new Hurling Alley using this new facility for Gaelic Football/Hurling for children. The approach taken uses Football and Hurling in different sessions to hone the different skill sets needed to further the long term goals of the Club and enhance these young players abilities during game time.

The coaches operate at all times in a positive environment where encouragement and the word NO or Not-able are replaced with keep going and the introduction of Hurling/Gaelic Football homework were everybody gets an A for effort. A simple method which can be used at home is the three blocks from 1-9 or A-I using chalk on a wall and let your Future star practice with a tennis ball or football hitting a square one at a time to improve hand eye co-ordination and maybe Maths or the Alphabet as well.
