INTERMEDIATE HURLING:
Our Intermediate hurlers suffered defeat at the hands of a hungrier Butlerstown side in the Gerry Kennedy Crash Repairs sponsored competition at Walsh Park last Saturday evening on a score-line of 2-23 to 0-20. This defeat leaves the team in a precarious position in their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
Butlerstown made the brighter start, leading by 4 points to 1, with Cormac Heffernan putting Ferrybank on the board. Ferrybank began to take a grip on the game, knocking over 11 of the next 12 scores, with Mark O' Brien, Sam Lawless, Seamus Burtchaell, and a super individual score from Luke Flynn, had the lads leading by 0-12 to 0-05, with six minutes remaining in the half.
However, Butlerstown fought back and replied with a goal, followed by three unanswered points, leaving them trailing by the minimum at the break. An early Sam Lawless score extended the lead, and with points being traded by both teams, Mark O' Brien the chief contributor, Ferrybank still lead by three points midway through the second-half.
Nevertheless, Butlerstown kept battling away and drew level with a second goal and from there on in took over the game, getting on top in all areas, and started putting over points from all angles, running out comfortable winners in the end.
No doubt, this result is a huge setback for the team, and they must go away and reflect on this performance, and come back even stronger for their final game against De La Salle in August.
Thanks to all who came along and supported the team on the night.
PANEL: Jono Brown, Nicky Ryan, Damien Ahern, Davy Atkins, Graham Coady, Shane O’ Sullivan, Andrew Heffernan, Luke Flynn (0-01), Mark O' Brien (0-12), Seamus Burtchaell (0-01), Sam Lawless (0-04), Jeff Lawless, Eoin O' Neill (0-01), Cormac Heffernan (0-01), John Ahern, Cormac O' Driscoll, Tiarnan Morrissey, Greg Murphy, Tommy Carew, Aidan Sinnott, Darryl Griffin.

UNDER 16 HURLING:
Our Under 16 hurlers began their Championship campaign last Sunday morning, with an exciting three point win over St. Carthage’s (Lismore/Ballysaggart) on a score-line of 1-15 to 2-9. The lads had to dig deep in the closing stages when it looked like the Lismore side were getting on top, but three unanswered scores secured the win.
Nathan Carton and Charlie McLaughlin had early points on the board for Ferrybank, but minutes later, St. Carthage’s replied with a goal of their own. However, Ferrybank response was impressive, with points from Nathan, Jack Haley, Ryan Tierney and Charlie McLaughlin to extend the lead. Nathan Carton then rattled the back of the St. Carthage’s net when he collected a high ball and shrugged of a couple of defenders to score a fine goal.
Just before the break, a long range St. Carthage’s free deceived the Ferrybank defence and the ball sailed into the Ferrybank net, leaving a point between the sides at the break.
Ferrybank had a lucky escape in that opening half, when St. Carthage’s were awarded a penalty, but the sliothar rattled back off of the crossbar and it was cleared. The two Charlies, Atkins and McLaughlin scored early points for Ferrybank to keep them ahead, and as the game began to heat up, St. Carthage’s came more into the game with points, but the impressive Ryan Tierney in midfield, Nathan Carton, the lively Charlie McLaughlin up front, Ben Fitzpatrick, Ola and Charlie Atkins in defence held the team together when St. Carthage’s drew level. With the game there for the taking, points from Charlie, Ryan and Nathan sealed a great win for the side.
Scorers on the day Nathan Carton (1-4), Ryan Tierney (0-05), Charlie McLaughlin (0-03), Jack Haley (0-01), Charlie Atkins (0-02).
