JUNIOR HURLING:
Ferrybank’s Junior Hurlers recorded a vital win over
Ballyduff Lower in their latest game in the Whites Bar sponsored competition
last Friday night on a scoreline of 2-16 to 1-12. Going into the game,
Ferrybank were short a number of players and had to dig deep to earn the two
points.
With the opening exchanges evenly contested, with Philly
Blake scoring the opening points, Ballyduff Lower were creating chances, but
the Ferrybank defence held firm, and took the scores where it mattered with
Darryl Griffin scoring a good point to keep Ferrybank in the hunt.
Midway through the opening half, Ferrybank scored a goal
when Philly Blake went on a solo run and his shot was saved by the Ballyduff
Lower goalie, but Marty Freeman was first to react, and put the ball into the
net. Ballyduff replied with a couple of points and had the upper hand, and were
rewarded with a goal of their own when a long ball from midfield sailed all the
way into the net.
Ferrybank’s second goal was immediate, with James Murphy
shot deceiving the Ballyduff goalie and the ball ending up in the net. Late
points from Alex Power and Philly ensured a 2-7 to 1-7 lead at the break.
Greg Murphy extended the lead straight away with a fine
points, but like the first-half, Ballyduff had a lot of the play, but hit some
bad wides at crucial stages. With the game in the balance and Ferrybank
fighting hard to stay in the game, four unanswered points by Ferrybank turned
the game in their favour with Philly, Conor Hogan, Darryl Griffin and James
Murphy adding to the scoreboard. Ferrybank’s defence survived late pressure, as
Ballyduff looked for a goal, but Alex Power finished the scoring on the night
with a fine point.
Overall this was a good win for the team, surviving a
spirited test from Ballyduff, and this win puts them into the knockout stages
of the competition.

UNDER 16 HURLING:
No Luck for the Under 16 hurlers last Friday night, as they
were defeated by leaders Tramore on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-07. The lads must
now turn their attention to the next game against Portlaw/Ballyduff which takes
place in Ferrybank next Friday night 8th September at 7pm.
INTERMEDIATE CAMOGIE:
The Intermediate Camogie side received a walkover form
Dungravan which was scheduled to take place last Friday night in Ferrybank.
UNDER 11 FOOTBALL:
Our Under 11 Footballers went on a scoring rampage against
Butlerstown last Friday night winning on a scoreline of 8-8 to 0-04. A good
team performance on the night by the team.
MINOR HURLING:
Ferrybank/Erin’s Own Minor side recorded a big win over St.
Molleran’s last Wednesday night in Poleberry, winning on a scoreline of 7-10 to
0-03. It keeps the combined side in the hunt for Championship honours, and they
now play Passage this coming Wednesday night September 6th at 6:30pm in
Passage, and your support will be welcomed.
UNDER 14 HURLING:
Hard luck to the Under 14 hurlers who were defeated by a
strong Ballygunner side in the final at Walsh Park last Saturday morning.
COUNTY DUTY:
It was hard luck for Mark O' Brien and the Waterford Senior
hurlers last Sunday in Croke Park, as they went down narrowly to Galway in the
All-Ireland final. The team gave us an enjoyable summer, and just fell short on
the day, and no doubt they will be back stronger next year. Thanks for the
memories Derek and the team.

RTÉ UP FOR THE MATCH:
The RTÉ cameras made their way to Ferrybank GAA club grounds
last Thursday afternoon to record a short bio on the club for the ‘Up For The
Match’ programme, which will be aired next Saturday night. A huge crowd came
along and enjoyed the occasion, particularly the kids; they demonstrated their
skills to the cameras and showed them how effective the "Sweeper"
system has been for the Waterford hurlers this year, with Mya and Izaak leading
the way.
A special word of thanks to all who decorated the club
grounds and the village itself for the occasion, and having it in pristine
condition, and also to Siobhan and Shiner for assisting the RTÉ team with their
help during the build-up.
COUNTY DUTY:
The very best of luck to the Waterford Senior Hurling team
next Sunday against Galway in the All-Ireland final. Our own Mark O' Brien has
been involved with the panel for the last couple of years, and let’s hope Mark
and the team can bring home Liam McCarthy
next Sunday. Best of luck lads – Déise abú!!!

INTERMEDIATE HURLING:
Our
Intermediate Hurlers exited the Gerry Kennedy Crash Repairs sponsored
competition last Friday night, where they were defeated by De La Salle in
Carrickbeg on a scoreline of 2-20 to 1-15.
Needing a win
to stay in the competition, Ferrybank were out battled in the final quarter,
where two quick goals in as many minutes settled this game.
The opening
exchanges were evenly matched, with little to separate the sides, as points
from Sam Lawless, John Ahern and Mark O' Brien kept Ferrybank level. De La
Salle kept things tight at the back, as Ferrybank forwards found it hard going.
Mark O' Brien kept Ferrybank ahead with some good points, while Johno Brown in
the goal pulled off a top save at point blank range, when it looked like De La
Salle were in for a goal. Going in at half-time, Ferrybank lead by 0-9 to 0-8.
An early
Robbie Carew point extended the lead, but De La Salle aided by the breeze were
never too far away, and hit over four unanswered scores to go into the lead,
and from there, never looked back. Shane O’ Sullivan and Mark O’ Brien hit
points to reduce the gap to two. However, with 15 minutes to go, De La Salle
profited on a mistake in the Ferrybank defence to score a goal, and moments
later scored a second from close range to open up clear daylight.
From there
on, Ferrybank could never make inroads into the De La Salle defence, which held
firm, and despite a Luke Flynn goal it was too little too late, as De La Salle
closed out the match with three more points to run out worthy winners.
No doubt this
was a very disappointing Championship campaign, and despite the talent in the
team, they weren’t good enough.

UNDER 16 HURLING:
Well done to
the Under 16 hurlers on a good win over Cappoquin last Friday night on a
scoreline of 2-11 to 0-09. This win keeps the lads in the hunt, and next up for
the team is a trip to play table toppers Tramore on Friday 1st September at 7pm.
UNDER 15 HURLING:
Ferrybank and
Sacred Heart played out a 1-09 draw last Sunday night in Ferrybank in wet
conditions. Both sides found it tough going and over the course of the game, a
draw was a fair result. No confirmed date for the replay has been made.
KELLOGG’S CÚL CAMP:
The Kellogg’s
Cúl Camp took place in Ferrybank last week, where big numbers took to the field
to learn about our national game and they had a great time. Our own Mark O'
Brien and Austin Gleeson were on hand to give some excellent advice and tips to
the kids, which they enjoyed throughout the week. Thanks also to Rosemary
Heffernan for being the coordinator for the Cúl Camp.
UP FOR THE MATCH:
This coming
Thursday August 24th, the Up For The Match cameras will visit the club grounds
from 2pm to 6pm. Everyone is most welcome to come along and attend, and parents,
if bringing along the kids, make sure they put on the Waterford jersey to show
your support. Also, if they have any lucky Mascot, or Lucky Charms, you can
bring them along as well.
This will be
a fun day for everyone, with plenty of stories to be told, and plenty of
banter, and the programme itself will be featured on Up For The Match which
will be aired on RTE 1 on Saturday September 2nd.
