ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

UNDER 16 HURLING:

Our Under 16 hurlers got back to winning ways last Wednesday night with a 4-12 to 1-13 win over Sacred Heart in Poleberry. The hero on the night was Shane Oates who scored 3-01, with Glen Power scoring the other goal. Points from Charlie McLoughlin, Ryan Tierney, Luke Butler, Jack Keogh-Moran and Nathon Carton added to the scoreboard.

This was a good overall performance from the team, and they can look forward now with confidence to the next game, which is scheduled to take place on Wednesday August 9^th, home to Cois Bhride at 7pm.

UNDER 12 HURLING:

Our Under 12 hurlers made the trip last Friday to Semple Stadium, Thurles to play three matches. The lads had a super day winning two of them, and going down by two points in the third game. This was a great experience for the players and they enjoyed the day throughout. Thanks to all the helpers who made it special.

UNDER 12 CAMOGIE:

Well done to the combined Ferrybank/Butlerstown Camogie team that defeated Brickey Rangers in the shield semi-final in Butlerstown last Saturday afternoon on a scoreline of 3-01 to 0-04. The combined side now play Abbeyside in the final, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday August 12th.

MINOR HURLING:

Ferrybank/Erin’s Own are back in Championship action this coming Wednesday night August 2nd at 7:30pm with an away match against Roanmore. Having won their opening game, the combined side will be anxious to maintain their unbeaten run and your support will be welcomed.

UNDER 11 FOOTBALL:

The Under 11 Footballers are back in action this coming Friday night August 4th at 6:30pm, with a home game against Gaultier.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL:

Our Junior Footballers qualified for the semi-final of the John J Murphy sponsored competition with a 1-18 to 2-04 win over Mount Sion in Ferrybank last Friday night. With both sides needing to win this game, Mount Sion made an excellent start to the game, with a goal in the opening two minutes.

However, Ferrybank came back in impressive fashion with points from Graham Coady, Sam Lawless and John Ahern. Moments later, Philly Blake received a pass from Graham Coady and slotted the ball into the net. Ferrybank kept the pressure up, and played some impressive football, and were rewarded with further points from Tommy Carew, Greg Murphy, Sam, Marty Freeman and Graham. By half-time the lads had built up a 1-11 to 1-2 lead.

Mount Sion came more into it in the second-half, and were unlucky with a number of scoring chances. However, they did take a goal chance that came their way to reduce the gap to six points midway through the half, but Philly, Greg and Graham steadied the ship with points

With the game end to end, Ferrybank had a number of goal chances to kill the game, but didn’t take them. John Ahern and Sam finished the scoring on the night. This was a good performance from the team, scoring some excellent points, and working as a team, playing some good football at times.

KELLOGG’S CÚL CAMP:

The Kellogg’s Cúl Camp 2017 will take place in the Ferrybank GAA grounds from Monday 14th to Friday 18th August form 10am-2:30pm. This is open to primary school children aged between 6 and 13 years of age.

ABP sponsored Ferrybank GAA Weekly Notes

JUNIOR HURLING:

Our Junior Hurlers made the trip to Clonea last Thursday night to play the home side in their latest game in John J Murphy sponsored competition. Following a good game of hurling, Ferrybank came away with the two points on a score-line of 4-14 to 1-15.

Ferrybank made an excellent start to the game with Tony Heffernan scoring two quick goals to open up an eight point lead, but Clonea soon recovered and started to eat into the Ferrybank lead scoring five unanswered points. Philly Blake with two points and Tony Heffernan with another point kept Ferrybank ahead. However, entering the closing minutes of the opening half, Clonea struck for a goal to reduce the gap to a point at the break.

The second-half was keenly fought with both sides trading scores, with James Murphy leading the way by scoring four excellent points from all areas of the field. With the game level, and in the balance, Ferrybank had a chance to extend the lead, when they were awarded a penalty, but Philly’s shot was well saved by the Clonea goalie.

Ferrybank’s defence dug deep when it mattered by not giving the Clonea forwards any chance of a goal, and entering the closing minutes, and leading by a point, an Alex Kinsella '65 went into the net, to open a four point lead. Marty Freeman pointed from close range, and Marty sealed the win with a fourth goal with a close range shot.

This was a great win for the team, as they were short several players, and the team played for one another, especially when Clonea threw everything at them in the second-half, the lads held firm, and took the scores when it mattered. JUNIOR FOOTBALL:

Our Junior Footballers play Mount Sion in their last league game of the John J Murphy sponsored competition on Friday 28th July at 7:30pm in Ferrybank. This is a game the team needs to win in order to make it through to the knockout stages, and your support will be welcomed on the night.

UNDER 16 HURLING:

Our Under 16's hurlers suffered their first defeat in this year’s championship last Friday night in Ferrybank going down to a very good An Ghaeltacht side on a scoreline of 3-16 to 2-13.

Things didn’t look good for Ferrybank early on, as An Ghaeltacht dominated the early exchanges and opened up a 1-05 to no score lead early on. However, credit to the team, as they refused to throw in the towel, and led by the impressive Ryan Tierney, who scored a fine individual goal, trailed by 1-10 to 1-04 at the break.

An Ghealtacht scored an early second goal to extend the lead, but points from Shane Oates and Cody Griffin kept Ferrybank scoreboard ticking over. Ferrybank began to get more of the play, and driven on by Jake Brophy, Nathon Lawlor, Charlie Atkins and Jack Haley saw them get within six points of An Ghaeltacht at the finish.

Despite missing a number of key players, no doubt the selectors will be happy with way the lads kept battling away throughout the game and never gave up. Special word of praise to Ryan Tierney who put in a fantastic shift in midfield and scored 1-10 for the team. Next up is this coming Wednesday night July 26th with an away match against Sacred Heart in Poleberry at 7pm.

MINOR HURLING:

Ferrybank / Erin’s Own played their opening game in this year’s Minor hurling championship last Wednesday night against Tramore in Poleberry, and the combined side ran out emphatic winners, winning on a scoreline of 3-11 to 1-03.

COUNTY DUTY:

Congratulations to Grainne Heffernan who was part of the Waterford Junior Camogie team that defeated Wicklow in the Liberty Insurance All Ireland Junior Championship in Walsh Park last Saturday afternoon. Also well done to the Waterford Senior Hurlers who defeated Wexford in the All-Ireland hurling quarter-final at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

PEADAR’S SUMMER CAMP:

The 26th Annual Peadar’s Summer Camp took place in the Ferrybank GAA grounds last week, and with Wednesday being a wash out, the other 4 days proved a brilliant success.

With glorious weather for those days, 306 Children descended to the field to learn the skills of our national game and all had a wonderful time. Throughout the week numerous players called down to the Summer camp, and offered great tips and advice to the kids. I it was great to see former Kilkenny hurling legends Michael Rice and Tommy Walsh coming down, signing numerous autographs, & Shirts . Also, current Waterford Senior Hurling players Austin Gleeson & Colin Dunford, along with Captain of the Waterford Senior Camogie team Fiona Morrissey, came down and this proved a huge hit for the kids and parents, posing for plenty of pictures.

Also the President of the F.A.I. Tommy Fitzgerald, Chief Executive, John Delaney, and former Soccer Internationals Stephen Hunt and Keith Andrews popped into the GAA grounds, after opening the new facilities in the Soccer grounds giving the Kids some helpful advice; very much appreciated lads.

As we all know Peadar’s Summer camp would be very hard to operate, and a huge thanks to the 50 volunteers who gave up the week, and came down to help out including Tony Power for the First Aid. Also many thanks to Ray Breen and Kel-Tech Engineering for his kind sponsorship of the camp, also thanks to Oxigen Bins, Brian Hickey for suppling the Blaas, Pat Lawless for the Sausages, John Cummins for the Orange Juice, Brian Flynn for the Water, Walsh's Lotto Shop for the Ice-Cream, Luke Myers for the Photos, and also to numerous other sponsors who contribute money towards the running of the camp.

Final words of thanks to the Ahearne family, who have kept the Summer camp going that was set up by their late Father, Peadar, which has gone from strength to strength year after year. Roll on 2018, and a date for the diary for Summer camp is Monday July 16th July 2018.
