Ferrybank GAA - Weekly Notes

CONDOLENCES:
There was wide spread grief and sadness in Ferrybank at the weekend over the passing of Margaret Browne, nee Flynn. The club would like to express our since sympathies to her husband Noel, her daughter Kelly, her son Jono, and to her parents, brothers, sisters and extended family. The Browne and Flynn families are well respected in the community, and are involved in the local GAA and soccer club. Margaret’s passing will leave a huge void in the community. Ar Dheis de go raibh a h-anam.

UNDER 15 FOOTBALL:
The club's Juvenile playing season came to an end in Carriganore on Sunday morning, where the Under 15 footballers completed a double as they were crowned County Champions with a thrilling 4-05 to 2-03 over a good St. Patrick’s side.
This is a fantastic achievement for this young team, and great credit has to be given to all involved in John Burns, Davy Butler, John Haley and John Brophy. Having defeated the same opposition in the hurling final, St. Pat’s came flying out of the traps, scoring two quick goals, but the team never panicked, and went into the half-time break leading by two points, thanks to a goal from Paul Hondanu and two points from Luke Butler.
The second-half was end-to-end, with both sides having chances, but crucially goals from Fortune Ndlovu and Nathan Carton won out the day.
Team captain Ben Fitzpatrick accepted the cup on the team’s behalf amid joyous scenes.

PANEL: Majiek Tomczuk, Jake Brophy, Ben Fitzpatrick, John Collins, Charlie Atkins, Nathan Lawlor, Ryan Tierney, Paul Hondanu, Eimhin Burns, Ola Akinjewe, Luke Butler, Nathan Carton, Reece Phelan, Cian Martin, Fortune Ndlovu, Glen Power, Charlie McLaughlin, Pawel Tomczuk, Jack Keogh-Moran, Stephen Imrien.

Congratulations also to Cian Martin who was selected as Man of the Match by the County Board representatives in the recent Under 15 hurling final in Dungarvan. Cian was selected for his brave and excellent display of goalkeeping skills on the day, contributing to a brilliant overall team display. Great credit is also due to Paddy and Niall Mackey who put Cian through his paces during the summer.

UNDER 15 FOOTBALL:
Congratulations to the Under 15 Footballers who were crowned Division 3 Eastern Champions with a thrilling win over St Saviours on a score-line of 2-04 to 0-06 win.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL:
Our Junior Footballers exited the John J Murphy sponsored competition at the semi-final stage last Wednesday night in Carriganore where they were defeated by a stronger Ballyduff Lower side. Ballyduff dominated the opening stages, with the opening two points, and moments they capitalised on a mistake in the Ferrybank defence and scored a goal to extend the lead.
Ferrybank got back into it with points from Luke Flynn and MJ Sutton. The lads enjoyed plenty of possession, and missed a great chance of a goal, when Marty Freeman shot from close range when wide. Further points from Ballyduff put them in control, and despite a point from Oisín MacCathmhaoil, Ballyduff held a six point lead at the break.
Ballyduff added another two quick points at the start of the second-half, before another mistake in the defence left Ballyduff in for goal number two, and at that stage the game was up, as Ballyduff added a third goal.
MJ Sutton replied with a consolation goal late on.  No doubt, the better team won, and thanks to Nicky and Pat for their help with the team during the year.
PANEL: Odhran MacCathmhaoil, Aidan Synnott, Damien Ahern, Pat O' Neill, Alex Kinsella, Philly Blake, Mark O' Brien, Oisín MacCathmhaoil (0-01), Luke Flynn (0-01), Tiernan Morrissey, MJ Sutton (1-01), Sam Lawless(0-01), Robbie Carew, Marty Freeman, Greg Murphy, Alex Power, Jason Hennessey.

UNDER 21 HURLING:
Ferrybank/Erin's Own have combined for this years Under 21 A' Championship, and last Sunday in Dunhill the team took on Clonea in the quarter-finals. Following a thrilling 80 minutes, it was the combined team that won by a point on a score-line of 3-13 to 0-21.
It looked like a comfortable win for the combined side as they blitzed Clonea with three goals in the opening 10 minutes with John Ahern, Robbie Carew and Eoin Daly finding the net. Points from Mark O' Brien and Robbie Carew, had them 10 points up.
However, some poor frees conceded left Clonea back into the game as the opening half wore on. Points from Sam O' Neill, Mark Shanahan and Mark O' Brien ensured the combined team lead by 3-05 to 0-10 at the break.
Clonea started the second-half brightly and three further frees reduced the gap, but Eoin Daly and Mark Shanahan kept the combined side ahead. With the game in the melting pot, Clonea were awarded a penalty, but Johno Brown in the goal, pulled off a top save, diving to his right to prevent a goal. Clonea were getting a grip on things, and three more frees edged them ahead for the first time, and it looked like they would hold on, but Sam O' Neill popped up with a point to send the game to extra time.
Clonea started with two points from play, but the combined side levelled matters with Alex Kinsella and Eoin Daly pointing. With the game there for the taking, Clonea edged ahead in the closing minutes, and it looked as they would advance, but a pointed free from Mark Shanahan, and with the last play, Robbie Carew evaded his markers and pointed from a tight angle to secure a win. This was tough on Clonea who fought back from a bad start, and really put it up to Ferrybank/Erin’s Own on the day, but the lads held firm, and no doubt can come on from this game, where they play Mount Sion in the semi-finals.
PANEL: Johno Brown, David Atkins, John Frampton, Stephen Long, Craig Brown, MJ Sutton, Jamie Knox, Mark O' Brien (0-02), Gavin Jacob, Mark Shanahan (0-04), Sam O' Neill (0-02), Jeff Lawless, John Ahern (1-0), Robbie Care (1-02), Eoin Daly (1-02), Tiernan Morrissey, Daniel Coady, Alex Kinsella (0-01),

JUNIOR FOOTBALL:

Our Junior Footballers are in semi-final action this coming Wednesday night, November 2nd at 8pm at Carriganore against Ballyduff Lower in the John J Murphy sponsored competition.

When the sides met earlier in the season Ballyduff edged out the lads by the minimum score, so another close game is on the cards. Your support will be welcomed on the night, and let’s hope the lads can reach the Eastern Final. Best of luck to all concerned.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL:
Our Junior Footballers made the trip to Kill last Saturday afternoon to play the home side in the quarter-final of the John J Murphy sponsored competition, and following a good game of Football, the Villagers came out winners on a score-line of 0-15 to 2-05.
Greg Murphy got the first score on the board with a well taken point to settle the team. Further points from Sam Lawless, Cormac O' Driscoll and Alex Kinsella extended the lead to four points. This lead was reduced when Kill struck for a goal, but the team kept the pressure on with further scores from Marty Freeman and John Ahern to leave Ferrybank leading 0-9 to 1-02 at the break.
Greg Murphy added further points to extend the lead, but the lads were rocked by another Kill goal on the counter attack, with the defence stretched. Kill now began to test Ferrybank by closing to within a point, but credit to the lads, as they coped with the pressure, and points from Alex, John, Greg and Luke sealed a deserved win for the side.
The team now go on and play Ballyduff Lower in the semi-final, possibly in a fortnight’s time.
PANEL: Odhran MacCathmhaoil, Aidan Synnott, Damien Ahern, Seamus Burtchaell, Tiernan Morrissey, Philly Blake, Alex Kinsella (0-02), Oisín MacCathmhaoil, Luke Flynn, Alex Power, Sam Lawless (0-01), John Ahern (0-02), Cormac O' Driscoll (0-01), Marty Freeman (0-01), Greg Murphy (-0-07), Robbie Carew.
