Ferrybank GAA - Weekly Notes

JUNIOR HURLING:

Our Junior Hurlers recorded a hard fought win over a gallant St. Pauls side last Friday night in Lisduggan on a score line of 2-10 to 2-08. Despite been short a few players, Ferrybank found the opening half tough going, and were trailing by three points at the break.

In the second-half Ferrybank found themselves further behind with a second St. Pauls’ goal. However, Ferrybank got a lifeline with Alex Power scoring a goal from close range to reduce the gap, and with Jeff Lawless scoring points, the lads began to get on top. Minutes from the end Jeff got a second goal to put Ferrybank into the lead and they held out to claim the points.

We have now completed our league programme, registering four wins, two draws and one defeat from our seven games, ensuring a place in the knockout stages, which will take place in a couple of weeks’ time.

COME HURL WITH ME:

A new initiative called 'Come Hurl with Me' will begin this coming Saturday August 20^th at 10am for one hour in the Ferrybank GAA grounds. While the Under 6 and Under 8s are doing their coaching session, there is a programme for Mums and Dads to learn hurling and camogie skills together with their sons and daughters, and become more involved with their development.

It will give parents who have never played or haven’t played in a long time a chance to learn some of the skills their child is learning, so they can enjoy hurling/camogie with their child and practice together.

This course will be delivered by Paul Martin who has a certified Level 1 coach badge, and a member of the Ferrybank Intermediate hurling panel. This programme will run until the end of September. If you are interested, please come along to the GAA grounds, where a hurley and sliothar will be provided for each person.

UNDER 14 HURLING:

Our Under 14 hurlers were well beaten by a much stronger St. Molleran’s side in Ferrybank last Wednesday night on a score line of 6-17 to 0-06.

UNDER 13 HURLING:

Our Under 13 hurlers play St. Saviours this coming Monday night in Ferrybank at 7pm.

UNDER 16 HURLING:

Our Under 16 hurlers travel to play Kilrossanty this coming Friday August 19^th at 7pm.

COUNTY DUTY:

Best of luck to Mark O' Brien and the Waterford U21 team and management this coming Saturday August 20^th. Waterford will take on Antrim in Thurles in the All-Ireland U21 hurling semi-final with a 4pm throw-in. Dublin and Galway will content the second semi-final with a 6pm throw-in, also in Thurles.

KIT FOR KIDS:

Ferrybank GAA club would like to thank all those who helped the club secure training equipment in the recent SuperValu Hypermarket 'Kit for Kids' promotion. This is the third year of the promotion, and the management and staff of SuperValu are to be commended for giving something back to the community for customer loyalty.

JUNIOR HURLING:

Our Junior hurlers suffered their first defeat in the championship last Friday night in Ferrybank where they were defeated by a good Kilmacthomas side on a scoreline of 1-25 to 1-09. Going into the game, Ferrybank were missing a few key players, but take nothing from Kilmac, as they were on top from the start, and raced into a four point lead before Greg Murphy opened Ferrybank’s account with a point.

Kilmac kept the pressure up and scored a goal midway through the opening half to extend their lead, but Ferrybank rallied in the last 10 minutes with points from Jeff Lawless, Daryl Griffin, Philly Blake and Greg Murphy to reduce the gap to 1-09 to 0-06 at the break.

Points were traded in the second-half and Ferrybank scored a goal when Jeff Lawless shot was saved on the line and Darryl Griffin pounced from close range to reduce the gap to four points. Any hopes of a comeback were well dashed, as Kilmac went on a scoring spree scoring points from all angles, and as Ferrybank began to fade, Kilmac ran out easy winners.

Despite this defeat, the lads remain in a good position to reach the knockout stages, and they can get back to winning ways next Friday August 12^th with a trip to play St. Paul’s at 7:30pm.

INTERMEDIATE HURLING:

Our Intermediate hurlers turned in an excellent performance last Saturday afternoon in a foggy Kill, defeating a strong Clonea side on a scoreline of 0-18 to 1-12 in their latest Gerry Kennedy Crash Repairs sponsored competition championship clash. With a heavy mist descending on the field, it was difficult at times to see the ball.
The opening exchanges were evenly contested with Sam Lawless and Robbie Carew replying with points after Clonea had got the opening scores. Clonea began to win a lot of breaking ball and began to run at the Ferrybank defence. They got their goal in the opening half, where the Clonea forward cut in by the byline and hit his shot into the corner of the net.

Ferrybank came back with Mark O' Brien putting three points over the bar to keep the sides level, and as the game began to heat up on and off the field, Ferrybank began to settle a bit better, and Robbie Carew and Oisín MacCathmhaoil saw their goal bound shots cleared by the Clonea defence. John Ahern sent over two fine scores to keep them in touch, which left the half-time score 1-08 to 0-09 in Clonea’s favour.

Early scores from Mark and Robbie had Ferrybank level, and with points been traded and the game in the balance with Ferrybank trailing by one, Clonea were awarded a penalty. Johno Brown pulled off a brilliant save for the penalty, diving to his left and keeping the ball out, and with the ball cleared, Mark O' Brien levelled it up with a great point.

Ferrybank got on top then and points from Oisín MacCathmhaoil and Mark closed out a three point win. Despite tough conditions, this was a great team performance by the players, digging deep when it mattered and grinding out an excellent win.
Our final game in the group stages is Ballygunner which was scheduled to take place on Saturday next, but with the Waterford seniors in action, it will be played at a later date which has yet to be confirmed.

JUNIOR CAMOGIE:

Our Junior Camogie side are back in Championship action this coming Saturday August 13^th with a trip to play Tallow at 6:30pm. Your support will be appreciated on the night.

UNDER 16 HURLING:

The Under 16 hurlers turned in an impressive display last Wednesday night defeating St. Molleran’s on a score-line of 5-19 to 2-03. The lads played some good hurling throughout the game, picking out their men and taking the scores where it mattered.

UNDER 15 HURLING:

Well done to the under 15 hurlers who recorded a good win over Ballygunner last Saturday on a score-line of 4-9 to 1-07. Next up is a home game on Sunday 14th August against St Saviours at 11am.

UNDER 14 HURLING:

Our Under 14 hurlers play St. Molleran’s this coming Monday August 8^th at 7pm in Ferrybank.

UNDER 12 FOOTBALL:

The under 12 Footballers travel to play Cois Bhride this coming Friday night August 12^th at 6:30pm.

CONDOLENCES:

Ferrybank GAA club would like to express their sympathies to the O' Neill family and extended family on the death of Josie O' Neill nee Butler who passed away last Friday. Ar dheis de go raibh an h-anam.

KELLOGS CÚL CAMP:

The annual Kellogs Cúl Camp will get under way in the Ferrybank GAA grounds on Monday August 8^th until Friday August 12^th. Even if you haven’t pre-registered your Child online, you can still bring them along on the morning to register. INTERMEDIATE HURLING:

Our Intermediate hurlers are back in championship action this coming Saturday August 6^th when they play Clonea in Kill at 2:30pm. A crucial test awaits the team and a win here would put them into the knockout stages. Your support will be appreciated on the day.

JUNIOR HURLING:

Our Junior Hurlers put their unbeaten record on the line this coming Friday night August 5^th when they play league leaders Kilmacthomas in Ferrybank at 7:30pm. Again, your support will be welcomed on the night.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL:

Our Junior Footballers made the trip to play Mount Sion last Friday night in their latest John J Murphy sponsored competition game and came away with the two points, winning on a score-line of 4-13 to 2-07.

Oisín MacCathmhaoil opening the scoring with a fine goal in the opening minutes and Tiernan Morrissey pointed straight away, but Mount Sion replied with 1-01 of their own. Points from Oisín and Sam Lawless put Ferrybank three points ahead, but Mount Sion levelled it up with a goal that dipped under the goalkeeper. However, coming up to half-time, Oisín and Sam pointed to leave Ferrybank ahead by the minimum.

The opening exchanges of the second-half were close, with Mount Sion pressing hard, but with the defence holding out, a Ferrybank counter attack saw Greg Murphy shot end up in the top corner. Moments later Greg got his second with another well placed effort, and with Alex Power contributing three fine points, Ferrybank opened up a clear lead. Minutes from the end, Greg capped a fine display by getting his hat-trick after converting a penalty, Feryrbank’s fourth in total. A good all round display from the team, and this win puts the team in a strong position to reach the knockout stages.

COUNTY DUTY:

Congratulations to Mark O' Brien and the Waterford Under 21 hurlers on their superb win over Tipperary last Wednesday night in the Munster Under 21 final at Walsh Park. Mark gave another excellent display in the middle of the park, working exceptionally hard throughout the game. They now go on and play Antrim in the semi-final in a couple of weeks’ time.

DÉISE DRAW:

We had one winner in last Friday nights Déise draw which took place in Ballymacarby, where Rosemary Heffernan won €200. Congratulations to Rosemary, and thanks to all who have purchased tickets for the draw. The August draw will take place on Friday August 26^th in Clashmore/Kinsalebeg.
